History of Our School

The current Federal Public School celebrated its official opening on December 13, 1977. Joe Yakubowski, then director for the Kirkland Lake Board of Education, spoke about how different groups were able to come together to plan a successful blending of open concept classrooms with traditional closed classroom formats. This blend of classroom formats continues to exist at Federal PS, providing students unique opportunities to work together as a school community. Federal PS Grade 6 student, Ian Hill was chosen to cut the ribbon on behalf of the Minister of Education. Ian later took on an important role in another school opening as he was the chief architect of the new Kirkland Lake District Composite School.

On December 13, 2007, Federal Public School celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala event. Former staff and students visited the school to hear guest speakers as well as school choir performances. Pictures from each of the school's 30 years lined the halls as guests mingled and visited their former classrooms. The theme for this celebration centered on Federal's proud past and bright future in Kirkland Lake.
